Who We Are
We're a vibrant Coptic Orthodox Christian community in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, deeply rooted in ancient traditions yet actively living our faith in the modern world. Our church offers a welcoming space for worship, fellowship, and spiritual growth, inviting all to deepen their relationship with God.
As part of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, we belong to the broader family of Oriental Orthodox Churches. Our lineage traces back to the 1st century AD, founded by Saint Mark the Apostle in Egypt. Central to our faith is the belief in Miaphysitism: that Christ has one, united nature, fully divine and fully human, without separation or confusion. This foundational understanding adheres to a theological heritage that has guided believers for nearly 2,000 years.

The Coptic Orthodox Basics

The Seven Sacraments
The Coptic Orthodox Church recognizes seven sacraments:Baptism, Chrismation (also known as Myron or Confirmation), Repentance and Confession, the Eucharist (also known as Holy Communion), Unction of the Sick, Matrimony, and Priesthood . These sacraments are considered channels through which believers receive divine grace and blessings.
Keeping the Faith for Over 2,000 Years
The Orthodox Church
No matter what happens to the modern world, our ancient faith stays the same. It's just as relevant and powerful and life-giving in today's world. At St. Mary and St. Mark Church our mission is to present eternal truths in a manner relevant to modern culture.
